びっくりした is more colloquial and spontaneous, while 驚いた can be used in both casual and formal situations. びっくりした is often an exclamation, whereas 驚いた is more descriptive.

Avoid directly translating 'very surprised' as とても驚かされた or similar passive causative forms unless you specifically mean 'was made to be surprised by someone.' The simple past form 驚いた or びっくりした is usually sufficient.
