Translation guide
The sound or act of walking, often heard but not seen. Japanese distinguishes the sound of footsteps, the footprints left behind, and the act of walking itself.
The audible sound of someone walking, such as steps approaching or echoing.
The most common and natural word for the sound of footsteps. Used for both human and animal steps.
The marks left on the ground by feet, such as in sand or snow.
The physical action of taking steps, often in a specific manner or context.
足音 (あしおと) is the sound of footsteps, while 足跡 (あしあと) is the footprint or track left behind. Do not confuse them. If you hear steps, use 足音; if you see marks, use 足跡.
English 'footsteps' can mean sound, marks, or the act of walking. Japanese uses different words for each. Using 足音 for footprints or 足跡 for sound will sound unnatural.
後ろから足音が聞こえた。
I heard footsteps behind me.
彼女は母親の足跡をたどった。
She followed in her mother's footsteps.
誰もいないホールに足音が響いた。
The sound of footsteps echoed in the empty hall.

誰かの足音が近づいてくる。

A literary or poetic term for the sound of footsteps. Rarely used in everyday speech.

The standard word for footprints. Can be used literally or figuratively (e.g., following in someone's footsteps).
雪の上に足跡が残っていた。
Footprints were left in the snow.
彼は父親の足跡をたどって医者になった。
He followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor.
A technical or formal term for footprints, often used in forensics or tracking. Not common in daily conversation.
現場には複数の足痕が発見された。
Multiple footprints were found at the scene.
Refers to one's gait, pace, or progress. Often used metaphorically for life's journey or historical progress.
彼の歩みは遅かった。
His footsteps were slow.
会社の歩みを振り返る。

Literally 'to carry one's feet,' meaning to go to a place, often with effort or purpose. Used when talking about visiting somewhere.
わざわざ足を運んでくれてありがとう。
Thank you for taking the trouble to come (literally: for carrying your feet here).
When 'footsteps' refers to the act of walking rather than the sound, simply use the verb 歩く. To specify the sound of walking, use 歩く音.
彼の歩く音が聞こえる。
I can hear his footsteps (the sound of him walking).
