Translation guide
The English phrase "go in" has several distinct meanings. This guide covers the most common uses for learners: physically entering a place, fitting inside something, and participating in an activity. It also touches on idiomatic uses like the sun going behind clouds or a door opening inward.
To move from outside to inside a building, room, or area.
The most common and general verb for entering a place. Used for rooms, buildings, and enclosed spaces.
Please go in.
He went into the room.
Emphasizes going inside, often used when the inside/outside distinction is important.
It's started raining, so let's go inside.
Formal or written term for entering, often used in prohibitions ("do not enter").
Authorized personnel only. (No entry for unauthorized persons.)
To be able to be contained or accommodated within a space.
The same verb as 'enter', but used for objects fitting into containers or spaces.
Will all the books go in this box?
The shoes didn't go in the suitcase.
Emphasizes fitting neatly or properly into a space, often with a sense of being settled.
To become involved in an activity, group, or event.
The standard verb for participating in events, meetings, or activities.
Are you going to go in on the meeting? (Will you participate?)
To join a group or activity, often implying becoming part of something already in progress.
Casual way to say 'do together', often used for informal activities.
Let's go in on that together.
When the sun or moon becomes hidden by clouds.
Describing the direction a door opens.
Used for doors that open inward. Often seen on signs.
This door goes in. (opens inward)
While 入る (はいる) is the direct equivalent, English 'go in' is often used idiomatically. For example, 'go in for sports' means 'to like/participate in sports' and would be スポーツが好きだ or スポーツをする, not 入る.
入る is intransitive (something goes in by itself), while 入れる is transitive (someone puts something in). Compare: 猫が箱に入る (The cat goes in the box) vs. 猫を箱に入れる (I put the cat in the box).
