A more formal word meaning 'to encounter', often used for unexpected meetings, sometimes with a nuance of difficulty or danger.

たまたま is a casual way to say 'by chance', similar to 偶然 but slightly more conversational.
たまたま駅で彼に出会った。
I happened upon him at the station.
Literally 'to come across' or 'to hit upon', often used when you encounter something while moving forward. Can imply a dead end or obstacle.

Do not translate 'happen upon' word-for-word. Phrases like 起こるの上に (okoru no ue ni) are nonsensical. Use the expressions above that convey chance encounter.
偶然 (guuzen) is neutral and can be used in both speech and writing. たまたま (tamatama) is more casual and conversational. For formal situations, prefer 偶然 or use 遭遇する.
