Translation guide
Expresses the idea of doing something openly, in a place where other people can see or hear, or in a shared social space. Japanese uses various adverbial phrases and nouns depending on whether the focus is on location, visibility, or social context.
Describing an action done where others can see or hear, not in private.
Literally 'in front of people'. The most common and natural way to say 'in public' when emphasizing that others are present. Used for actions like speaking, crying, eating, etc.
人前で話すのは緊張する。
I get nervous speaking in public.
I don't want to cry in public.
More formal, often used for official or ceremonial contexts. 'Public occasion/forum'.
公の場で発言する機会が増えた。
Opportunities to speak in public have increased.
Means 'openly' or 'publicly', often with a nuance of doing something without hiding it, sometimes defiantly. Used in legal or formal contexts.
彼は公然と批判した。
He criticized openly/in public.
Being outside the home, in a shared space like a street, park, or store.
Simply 'outside'. Very common for everyday activities like eating, playing, or meeting someone. Implies not indoors/at home.
外で遊ぼう。
Let's play outside/in public.
外で食事をするのは気持ちいい。
Eating outside feels nice.
Refers to the place one goes out to; often used when talking about doing something while out of the house/office.
外出先でメールをチェックする。
I check emails while I'm out (in public).
Something that is not hidden, known to many people.
Adverb meaning 'publicly', 'officially'. Used for announcements, acknowledgments, or making something public.
その事実はまだ公にされていない。
That fact hasn't been made public yet.
Noun meaning 'common knowledge' or 'public awareness'. Often used in formal contexts.
その問題は周知の事実だ。
That problem is a matter of public knowledge.
Do not directly translate 'in public' as 公共で or パブリックで. These are not natural Japanese. Use the phrases above depending on context.
人前で emphasizes the presence of other people (audience). 外で simply means outdoors/outside the home. Choose based on whether the focus is on being watched or just being outside.
