Emphasizing that something will be done only when there is no other way.
A clear, explanatory phrase meaning 'only when there is absolutely no other way'. Useful for setting conditions.
どうしても他に方法がない場合に限り、この薬を使います。
Only as a last resort will we use this medicine.
Do not translate 'last resort' word-for-word as 最後のリゾート. While understandable, it sounds unnatural and is not idiomatic Japanese.
Slightly more formal or technical than 最後の手段. Often used in business or strategic contexts.
最終手段として、値下げを検討します。
As a last resort, we will consider lowering the price.
A literary or formal expression meaning a desperate measure taken when cornered. Rare in everyday speech.
それは窮余の一策だった。
It was a desperate last resort.
Formal adverbial version, suitable for business or official statements.
