To feel confused, disoriented, or unsure about what is happening or what to do in a situation.
General word for 'get confused'. Covers mental disorientation in various contexts.
突然の質問に混乱してしまった。
I got confused by the sudden question.
In Japanese, physical disorientation (lost in a place) and mental disorientation (confused about a situation) are usually expressed with different phrases. Use 道に迷う for getting lost geographically, and 混乱する or わけがわからなくなる for mental confusion. Mixing them can sound unnatural.
The literal translation '方位を失う' (ほういをうしなう) is rarely used in everyday Japanese. It sounds technical or literary. Stick to the phrases above for natural expression.
霧の中で方向感覚を失った。
I lost my sense of direction in the fog.
Literally 'become a lost child'. Used when you are lost like a child, often in a crowd or unfamiliar place. Can be used by adults humorously or seriously.
駅で迷子になりそうになった。
I almost got lost at the station.
Literally 'become unable to tell where one is'. A longer, explanatory phrase.
暗くて自分がどこにいるかわからなくなった。
It was dark and I lost track of where I was.
Literally 'become unable to understand the reason/situation'. Very common for losing one's mental bearings.
何がなんだかわけがわからなくなった。
I completely lost track of what was going on.
Literally 'lose sight of direction'. Used for losing one's sense of purpose or direction in life or a project.
プロジェクトの方向性を見失ってしまった。
We lost sight of the project's direction.
Literally 'lose sight of oneself'. Means to lose one's identity, values, or sense of self.
忙しすぎて自分を見失いそうだ。
I'm so busy I feel like I'm losing myself.
Onomatopoeic word for being flustered or in a panic, losing composure.
急な変更であたふたしてしまった。
I got flustered by the sudden change.
