Translation guide
Expresses that something happened or became true a short time ago, emphasizing that it was not long before now. In Japanese, this is often conveyed with adverbs like 最近 (saikin), つい最近 (tsui saikin), or この間 (kono aida), or with grammar patterns such as 〜たばかり (ta bakari) or 〜たところ (ta tokoro).
To say that something happened a short time ago, often with a sense of recency.
A general adverb meaning 'recently' or 'lately'. It can refer to a point in the recent past or a recent period. When used with past tense, it means 'only recently'.
To say that a state or situation existed until very recently, but has now changed.
Means 'until recently'. Used with a past state or action that continued until a short time ago.
最近までそのことを知らなかった。
I didn't know that until only recently.
Both mean 'just did something', but 〜たばかり is subjective (the speaker feels it was recent), while 〜たところ is more objective (the action was just completed). 〜たところ is often used when the result is still evident.
ご飯を食べたばかりなのに、もうお腹が空いた。
Even though I only recently ate, I'm already hungry.
今、駅に着いたところです。
I've just arrived at the station.
Do not translate 'only recently' word-for-word as だけ最近 or similar. Use the natural expressions above.
最近、引っ越しました。
I only recently moved.
彼は最近までここに住んでいた。
He lived here until only recently.
Emphasizes that something happened very recently, just a short while ago. More emphatic than 最近 alone.
つい最近、彼に会った。
I met him only recently.
Attached to the past tense of a verb, this pattern means 'just did something' or 'only recently did something'. It emphasizes that the action was completed very recently.
日本に来たばかりです。
I only recently came to Japan.
この本は買ったばかりで、まだ読んでいない。
I only recently bought this book and haven't read it yet.
Similar to 〜たばかり, but often implies that the action has just been completed and the situation is still fresh. Slightly more formal.
今、帰ってきたところです。
I only recently got home.
Means 'the other day' or 'recently'. Used in casual conversation to refer to a recent past event.
この間、新しいカフェを見つけた。
I found a new café only recently.
He was a student until only recently.
Emphasizes that the state lasted until very recently, just a short while ago.
つい最近までここに住んでいた。
I lived here until only recently.
