A guide to expressing the English phrase 'or else' in Japanese, covering its main uses: presenting an alternative, giving a warning or threat, and expressing 'otherwise'.

The most basic way to list alternatives. Simply use the particle か between nouns or clauses.
コーヒーか紅茶はいかがですか。
Would you like coffee or tea?
Which would you prefer, watching a movie or relaxing at home?
Used when asking someone to choose between two options, often in questions. More conversational than か alone.
電車で行く？それともバス？
Are you going by train, or by bus?
Formal or written alternative to か. Often used in official documents or instructions.
パスポートまたは運転免許証をご提示ください。
Please present your passport or driver's license.
To imply negative consequences if something is not done, often used as a standalone phrase or at the end of a sentence.
Literally 'if not so', this is the most direct equivalent of 'or else' as a threat. It can be used at the beginning or end of a sentence.
早くしろ、さもないと置いてくぞ。
Hurry up, or else I'm leaving you behind.
宿題をやりなさい。さもないとゲームは禁止です。
Do your homework, or else no games.
A slightly softer, more conversational version of さもないと. Literally 'if you don't do that'.
ちゃんと謝ったほうがいいよ。そうしないと、彼女はもっと怒るよ。
You'd better apologize properly, or else she'll get even angrier.
Casual contraction of そうでないと. Common in everyday speech.
A shortened form often used in casual speech, where the verb negative conditional implies 'or else'. The consequence is often left implied.
早くしないと！
Hurry up, or else!
To state what will happen if the preceding condition is not met, similar to 'if not, then...'.
The standard written form of 'otherwise'. More formal than さもないと.
この書類を金曜日までに提出してください。さもなければ、申請は却下されます。
Please submit this document by Friday. Otherwise, your application will be rejected.
A slightly less formal alternative to さもなければ, used in both spoken and written contexts.
雨が降るかもしれない。そうでなければ、ピクニックに行こう。
It might rain. Otherwise, let's go on a picnic.
A contracted, more casual form of そうでなければ.
Do not translate 'or else' word-for-word as または他 (mata wa hoka) or similar. This is unnatural and does not convey the intended meaning.
さもないと is more common in spoken threats or warnings, while さもなければ is preferred in formal writing. Both mean 'otherwise', but the nuance of urgency is stronger with さもないと.
急ごう、でないと遅れる。
Let's hurry, or else we'll be late.
彼は忙しいんだ。でなければ、来るはずだよ。
He's busy. Otherwise, he would come.
