The person is acting in a way that doesn't match their usual self.
Attached to a noun or pronoun to mean 'not like ~'. Very common and natural way to say something is out of character.
彼が怒るなんて、彼らしくない。
It's out of character for him to get angry.
そんなことを言うなんて、君らしくないよ。
Saying something like that is out of character for you.
Literally 'not the usual ~'. Used to point out that someone is not acting like their normal self.
今日はいつもの君じゃないね。
You're not your usual self today.
Means 'doesn't fit one's personality'. Slightly more formal or analytical.
彼がそんなに社交的になるのは性格に合わない。
It's out of character for him to be so sociable.
The action is not appropriate for the person's position, job, or the situation.
Formal and strong expression meaning 'unbecoming of ~' or 'not befitting ~'. Used for serious breaches of conduct.
教師にあるまじき行為だ。
That's conduct unbecoming of a teacher.
Means 'disqualified as a ~'. Strongly implies the person has failed to meet the standards of their role.
リーダーとして失格だ。
That's out of character for a leader. / You're disqualified as a leader.
Means 'not suited to the role'. More neutral and descriptive.
その発言は彼の役割にそぐわない。
That remark is out of character for his role.
An actor or fictional character behaves in a way that doesn't align with their established persona.
Common in fan communities and casual talk about fiction. Means 'the character breaks down' or 'character derailment'.
あのシーンで主人公が急に泣くなんて、キャラが崩壊してる。
The protagonist suddenly crying in that scene is out of character.
Means 'not fully in character' or 'not immersed in the role'. Used for actors.
彼の演技は役に入りきっていなくて、不自然だった。
His acting was out of character and unnatural.
らしくない is the most direct and common way to say 'out of character'. いつもの〜じゃない is more colloquial and often used in spoken Japanese to express surprise at someone's unusual behavior.
彼が遅刻するなんて、彼らしくない。
It's out of character for him to be late.
今日はいつもの彼じゃない。
He's not his usual self today.
Do not translate 'out of character' literally as キャラクターの外 (character no soto) or similar. It will not be understood. Use the phrases above depending on context.
