Translation guide
The English word 'queer' has multiple meanings: as an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities, as a descriptor for something strange or odd, and historically as a slur. This guide focuses on the modern, reclaimed sense related to LGBTQ+ identity, while also covering the 'strange' meaning and important cultural notes.
Referring to people who are not heterosexual and/or not cisgender, often used as a reclaimed, inclusive identity.
Direct loanword from English, used primarily in academic, activist, and some community contexts. Not widely understood by the general public. Often written in katakana.
クィア理論は、性とジェンダーの固定観念を問い直す。
Queer theory questions fixed ideas about sexuality and gender.
In everyday conversation, Japanese speakers often use more specific terms like ゲイ (gay), レズビアン (lesbian), バイセクシュアル (bisexual), トランスジェンダー (transgender), or the broader LGBT (エルジービーティー). 'Queer' as an umbrella term is less common outside specialized circles.
彼はゲイだ。
He is gay.
LGBTの権利について話し合おう。
Let's discuss LGBT rights.
Means 'sexual minority'. A more formal, academic term that can encompass queer identities, but may sound clinical.
性的マイノリティの人々が直面する課題は多い。
Sexual minorities face many challenges.
Describing something that is unusual, weird, or not normal.
The most common and neutral adjective for 'strange' or 'queer' in the sense of odd. Can describe situations, feelings, or appearances.
彼は奇妙な帽子をかぶっていた。
He was wearing a queer hat.
奇妙な音が聞こえた。
I heard a queer sound.
Colloquial adjective meaning 'strange', 'weird', or 'funny'. More casual than 奇妙な. Can sometimes carry a negative nuance.
変な味がする。
It tastes queer.
Means 'mysterious', 'wonderous', or 'strange' in a fascinating way. Often used for things that are intriguingly odd.
不思議な出来事だった。
It was a queer incident.
Means 'bizarre', 'eerie', or 'uncanny'. Stronger than 奇妙な, often implying something unsettling.
異様な静けさが漂っていた。
A queer silence hung in the air.
Feeling a bit sick or off, as in 'I feel queer'.
Standard phrase for feeling unwell or nauseous. Not a direct translation of 'queer' but conveys the same meaning in context.
なんだか気分が悪い。
I feel a bit queer.
Another common way to say 'not feeling well', slightly more formal than 気分が悪い.
今日は具合が悪くて、会社を休んだ。
I felt queer today, so I took the day off work.
Using 奇妙な or 変な to refer to a person's sexual orientation or gender identity would be offensive and misunderstood. Stick to クィア or specific identities when discussing LGBTQ+ topics.
クィア is a direct loanword but is not as widely recognized as LGBT (エルジービーティー). In many contexts, LGBT is the safer, more understood umbrella term. クィア is often used in academic, artistic, or activist circles to challenge norms beyond just identity categories.
When translating 'queer' as 'strange', choose the adjective based on nuance: 奇妙な for neutral oddness, 変な for casual weirdness, 不思議な for mysterious strangeness, and 異様な for eerie bizarreness.
それは奇妙な見た目の動物だ。
That's a queer-looking animal.
ちょっと気分が悪いから、帰るかもしれない。
I'm feeling a bit queer; I might go home.
