I haven't heard from him yet. (He hasn't sent word.)
To inform or let someone know. Often used when the information itself is the focus.
結果を知らせてください。
Please send word of the results.
To send a quick first notice, often in business or emergency contexts.
事故が起きたらすぐに一報を入れてください。
If an accident occurs, please send word immediately.
To have a message delivered through another person or by indirect means.
To ask someone to pass on a message. The standard way to 'send word' through a third party.

Do not translate 'send word' literally as 言葉を送る (ことばをおくる). This sounds unnatural and is not used in Japanese. Use the phrases above instead.
