How to express being speechless in Japanese, from shock and awe to being at a loss for words.
You are so surprised, impressed, or overwhelmed that you cannot speak.
Literally 'to lose words'. A common and natural way to say you are speechless from shock or amazement.
あまりの美しさに言葉を失った。
I was speechless at the beauty of it.
彼の無礼な態度に言葉を失った。
I was speechless at his rude attitude.
You are so furious or distressed that words fail you.
Literally 'words don't come out'. Used when you are so emotional (angry, sad) that you can't find the words.
悔しくて言葉が出なかった。
I was so frustrated I couldn't speak.
You don't know what to say because the situation is awkward, delicate, or you lack a response.
Literally 'have no words to return'. Used when you cannot think of a reply, often because someone has made a strong point or you are embarrassed.
彼の正論に返す言葉がなかった。
I had no words to reply to his sound argument.
Both mean 'to be speechless', but 言葉を失う is more common in everyday speech and can be used for positive amazement. 絶句する is slightly more formal and often implies a negative shock or embarrassment that stops you mid-sentence.
美しい景色に言葉を失う。
To be speechless at the beautiful scenery.
失礼な発言に絶句する。
To be speechless at a rude remark.
無言 means 'silent' or 'without speaking', but it does not carry the emotional nuance of being speechless. Saying 無言になった sounds like you simply stopped talking, not that you were overwhelmed.
サプライズパーティーを見て、言葉を失った。
I was speechless when I saw the surprise party.
彼女は怒りで言葉が出なかった。
She was speechless with rage.
To be at a loss for words, often from shock or embarrassment. Slightly more formal/literary than 言葉を失う.
突然の質問に絶句してしまった。
I was speechless at the sudden question.
To be dumbfounded or taken aback, often by something unexpected. Implies a stunned silence.
その光景にあっけにとられて、何も言えなかった。
I was so dumbfounded by the sight that I couldn't say anything.
To be flabbergasted, stunned into silence. Stronger than あっけにとられる, often used for negative shock.
彼の突然の告白に唖然とした。
I was speechless at his sudden confession.
Literally 'cannot speak'. Can mean physically unable to speak, but also used figuratively for being so shocked you can't talk.
驚きのあまり口がきけなかった。
I was so surprised I couldn't speak.
Cannot even say a thing. Emphasizes complete inability to speak due to emotion.
ショックでものも言えなかった。
I was so shocked I couldn't say a word.
To be stuck for words, to falter in speech. Often used when you hesitate or can't continue speaking.
質問に答えることができず、言葉に詰まった。
I couldn't answer the question and was stuck for words.
