A stock exchange is a marketplace where stocks and other securities are bought and sold. In Japanese, the most common term is 証券取引所, but 株式市場 is also used, especially when referring to the stock market in general.

証券取引所 refers specifically to the physical or organizational exchange (like NYSE or TSE). 株式市場 is the abstract market for stocks. In many contexts, they are interchangeable, but 証券取引所 is more formal and institutional.
