To say that a machine, device, or system ceases to operate.
The most common way to say a machine breaks down or stops working. Intransitive verb.
My computer stopped working.
The air conditioner is broken.
Literally 'doesn't move', used when a machine won't operate. Intransitive.
The car won't start.
More formal term for malfunction or breakdown. Often used in technical contexts.
The elevator is out of order.
To say that someone quits, retires, or ceases to work.
To express that something slowly stops working or loses effectiveness.
The clock stopped working.
