夏 (natsu) is the everyday word for summer. 夏季 (kaki) is more formal and often used in official contexts like 'summer vacation' (夏季休暇). 夏期 (kaki) is used for specific periods like 'summer term' (夏期講習). In most casual situations, 夏 is sufficient.
