A discourse marker used to transition, conclude, or prompt a response. Japanese equivalents depend on the flow of conversation.
Used to shift topics, start a new phase, or signal a change in conversation.
Polite and neutral. Commonly used in formal settings or when initiating a new topic.
では、次の議題に移りましょう。
Well then, let's move on to the next agenda item.
Used to encourage the listener to speak, often after a pause or when seeking confirmation.
Very casual. Equivalent to 'So?' or 'And then?' Used to prompt continuation.
で? 結局どうなったの?
Well then? What happened in the end?
Neutral. 'And then?' or 'So what happened?'
Used to signal the end of a conversation or activity.
Casual farewell. 'Well then, bye.'
じゃあね、また後で。
Well then, see you later.
Polite way to end a formal interaction. 'Well then, that's all.'
Casual contraction of では. Used among friends or in informal situations.
じゃあ、また明日ね。
Well then, see you tomorrow.
Slightly more formal than では. Often used in speeches or announcements.
それでは、会議を始めます。
Well then, let's begin the meeting.
それで? 彼は何て言ってた?
