research, study
究 centers on thorough investigation: researching or studying something deeply to get to the bottom of it.
究 combines 穴 (hole, cavity) and 九 (nine), but the historical origin is uncertain. The modern form is often explained as probing deeply into a hole to reach the end, which fits the meaning of exhaustive research.
Picture a researcher digging into a deep hole (穴) with a bent tool shaped like 九, determined to uncover every last detail.
For キュウ, imagine a researcher shouting 'Q!' (as in 'question') while digging into a hole: Q -> キュウ, because research is all about asking questions.
