damp, wet, moist
湿 centers on the presence of moisture: something damp, wet, or moist. The idea covers both the state of being wet and the process of becoming moist.
湿 is the modern Japanese simplified form of 濕. The older form combines 氵 (water) with 㬎 (which likely contributed the sound), expressing dampness or moisture. The modern right side 显 is a simplification.
Water 氵 on the left and a sun 日 over a container 业 on the right: picture the sun heating water in a container, making the air damp and moist.
For シツ, imagine a wet sheet hanging in the damp air: sheet -> シツ, and the moisture soaks through.
