Women in the Edo period called sushi 'sumoji'.
「おすもじ」は、すしを上品に言い換えた女房
'Osumoji' is one of the court-lady words that elegantly rephrased sushi.
Derived from すし (sushi) by replacing the second syllable し with もじ, a pattern seen in court-lady words (女房詞). The kanji 文字 (moji) is used phonetically for もじ.
