Physics term for the electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle passes through a dielectric medium at a speed greater than the phase velocity of light in that medium.

The pale blue light seen in the water of a nuclear reactor is Cherenkov radiation.
Named after the Soviet physicist Pavel Cherenkov, who discovered the effect in 1934. The Japanese term is a direct borrowing of the English 'Cherenkov radiation'.
