Rare, formal noun or suru-verb. The first meaning refers to receiving favorable treatment or recognition from a superior; the second is a general meeting or encounter. Both uses are uncommon in modern Japanese.

He was appreciated by his boss and entrusted with an important task.
A chance meeting changed the fate of the two.
