Legal term for a judge's incidental remark or opinion that is not essential to the decision and thus not binding precedent. Also used more broadly for a digression or aside in argument or writing.

• 判はん決けつ文ぶんの傍ぼう論ろんは法ほう的てき拘こう束そく力りょくを持もたない。

  The obiter dicta in the judgment have no binding legal force.

• 彼かれの論ろん文ぶんは本ほん題だいから外はずれた傍ぼう論ろんが多おおい。

  His paper contains many digressions that stray from the main topic.
