Japanese territory in southern Hokkaido (Edo period)
Historical term referring to the area of southern Hokkaido controlled by the Japanese (Wajin) during the Edo period, as opposed to the Ainu lands (蝦夷地). Often contrasted with 蝦夷地.

Compound of 和人 (wajin, 'Japanese people') and 地 (chi, 'land'). The term emerged in the Edo period to distinguish Japanese settlements from Ainu territories.
