noun
young master; son of a noble
Archaic term for the son of a high-ranking person, also used as a form of address. Not used in modern Japanese outside historical contexts.
「和子様、お呼びでございます」と家来が言った。
'Young master, you are summoned,' said the retainer.
The historical derivation is uncertain; the kanji 和 (peace/harmony) and 若 (young) are conventionally associated with the meaning 'young master' in archaic usage.
