Used for burying objects or remains directly in the earth. Less common than 埋める (うめる) in modern Japanese.

Traditional fire-management technique: covering hot coals with ash to keep them smoldering, or arranging charcoal in a hibachi to start a fire. Specialized and somewhat archaic.

Cover the charcoal in the hibachi with ash to keep the fire going longer.
炭を埋けて火をおこす。
Bank the charcoal to start a fire.
