erythaeid mite
A type of small red mite of the superfamily Erythraeoidea, often seen on the ground or on plants. Not harmful to humans.
In spring, I often see erythaeid mites in the garden.
Because erythaeid mites are red and tiny, they are sometimes mistaken for ticks.
Usually written in katakana; the kanji form 宝蜱 is rare and mainly used in taxonomic contexts.
Kanji form; 蜱 is a non-jōyō character meaning tick or mite, rarely used outside scientific literature.
The name タカラダニ literally means 'treasure mite', but the exact origin is uncertain. It may refer to the bright red color resembling a treasure, or derive from an old name.
