mountain witch; mountain hag
A female yōkai or supernatural being living in the mountains, often contrasted with 山姥 (やまうば). In folklore, 山女 is sometimes a younger or more beautiful version, but usage varies.

A climbing plant with edible fruit, also known as 通草 (あけび). The name 山女 is a less common alternative, possibly from a folk association with mountain women.
