to begin grandly; to start with a bang
Idiomatic expression derived from the image of a theater curtain being cut and dropped to start a performance. Used for events, projects, or eras that begin in a dramatic or spectacular way. The literal meaning 'to throw open the curtains' is not used in modern Japanese; the expression is always figurative.
