Archaic polite second-person pronoun, typically used by samurai when addressing equals or those of slightly higher status. Not used in modern Japanese.
「御辺もご存知の通り」と侍は言った。
"As you also know," said the samurai.
The derivation is uncertain; the kanji 御 (honorific prefix) and 辺 (vicinity, direction) suggest a respectful way of referring to someone's person or direction.
