Humble first-person pronoun used by Buddhist monks, especially associated with Shinran (1173–1263). Extremely rare in modern Japanese; encountered only in historical or religious contexts.
親鸞は自らを「愚禿」と称した。
Shinran referred to himself as 'Gutoku'.
