waiting area
Rare term for a designated waiting space, such as in a station, theater, or official building. Modern Japanese more commonly uses 待合所 or 待合室.
At the old station, there was a small waiting room labeled '控所'.
Compound of 控 (ひかえ, 'waiting, reserve') and 所 (じょ, 'place'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the spelling is conventionally associated with a place for waiting.
