noun
Chinese wisteria
A species of wisteria native to China, Wisteria sinensis. The kanji spelling 支那藤 is now rare and potentially problematic; the plant is normally referred to in kana.
庭にシナフジが咲いている。
Chinese wisteria is blooming in the garden.
藤 is the general term for wisteria, especially the Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda). シナフジ specifically refers to the Chinese species.
From 支那 (Shina, an old name for China) + 藤 (fuji, wisteria). The kanji 支那 is now largely avoided, and the plant name is usually written in kana.
