Korean chipmunk; Tamias sibiricus barberi
A subspecies of Siberian chipmunk found in Korea. The Japanese name literally means 'Korean striped squirrel'. Usually written in katakana as チョウセンシマリス.

Kanji spelling; the word is usually written in kana. The kanji form is rare and may not be widely recognized.

シマリス is the general term for chipmunk (genus Tamias). チョウセンシマリス specifies the Korean subspecies.
Compound of 朝鮮 (Chōsen, 'Korea') + 縞栗鼠 (shima-risu, 'chipmunk'). The kanji 縞 means 'stripe', 栗鼠 is an older term for squirrel.
