manas-vijnana; defiled mental consciousness
Buddhist term for the seventh consciousness, which mistakenly perceives a self and gives rise to ego-attachment. Used in Yogacara and related traditions.
In Yogacara, manas-vijnana is considered the root of ego-attachment.
Borrowed from Sanskrit manas-vijñāna, via Chinese 末那識. The kanji are used phonetically (ateji) to represent the Sanskrit sounds.
