Azuma-uta; old Kanto-area folk songs
Historical term referring to folk songs from the eastern provinces (Kanto region), especially those collected in the Man'yōshū. Not used for modern songs.
The Azuma-uta in the Man'yōshū preserve many dialects of the eastern provinces from that time.
From 東 (azuma, 'eastern provinces') + 歌 (uta, 'song'). The reading azuma is an old word for the Kanto region.
