clan temple; family temple
A Buddhist temple built and maintained by a specific clan or family, often dedicated to a guardian deity of that clan. Historical term, but still used in contexts discussing traditional family temples.
Several old clan temples remain in this area.
Compound of 氏 (uji, 'clan, family') and 寺 (tera, 'temple'), with rendaku voicing to でら. Refers to a temple historically associated with a particular clan.
