expression, godan verb (-mu)
wait and see which way the wind blows; sit on the fence; wait for a good opportunity
Proverbial expression originating from a historical anecdote about a warlord who waited at Horagatoge to see which side would win before joining. Used when someone delays a decision to see how a situation develops, often with a negative connotation of opportunism.
彼は洞ヶ峠を決め込んで、どちらの案にも賛成しなかった。
He sat on the fence and didn't agree with either proposal.
選挙の結果が出るまで洞ヶ峠を決め込むつもりだ。
I plan to wait and see until the election results come out.
