Miyama stag beetle
A species of stag beetle (Lucanus maculifemoratus) found in mountainous areas of Japan. Often kept as a pet by children.
In summer, I look forward to searching for Miyama stag beetles in the mountains.
The Miyama stag beetle is larger than the sawtooth stag beetle and has impressive mandibles.
Katakana spelling is common for this beetle name; usually written in kana.
Kanji spelling exists but is rarely used; the word is normally written in kana.
The name combines 深山 (deep mountains) and 鍬形 (hoe-shaped, referring to the mandibles resembling a traditional hoe). The exact origin is uncertain, but it describes the beetle's habitat and appearance.
