Traditional Japanese paper treated with the astringent juice of unripe persimmons, making it water-resistant and durable. Used for wrapping, stencil patterns, and crafts.
Shibugami was used for wrapping because it is water-resistant.
Stencils made of shibugami are used for katazome dyeing.
Compound of 渋 (shibu, 'astringent persimmon juice') + 紙 (kami, 'paper'). The reading kami changes to gami due to rendaku.
