conjunction
however; even so; be that as it may
A somewhat formal or literary conjunction used to concede a point while introducing a contrasting statement. Similar to しかし or けれども, but with a slightly old-fashioned or written feel.
努力した。されど、結果は伴わなかった。
I made an effort. However, the results did not follow.
彼は若い。されど、その考え
He is young. Even so, his thinking is profound.
しかし is the most common neutral 'but/however'. されど is more literary and less frequent in everyday speech.
けれども is a common conjunction similar to 'although'. されど is more formal and often used at the beginning of a sentence.
Derived from the classical Japanese conjunction されど, which itself comes from 然れ (the imperative form of 然り, 'to be so') + ど (concessive particle).
