room for menservants
Historical term for a room where male servants stayed or worked, often in a traditional household or inn. Contrasts with 女部屋 (room for maidservants).

In large merchant houses of the Edo period, there were separate rooms for male and female servants.
Compound of 男 (おとこ, 'man') and 部屋 (へや, 'room'), literally 'man room'. The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but it follows a common pattern for designating servant quarters.
