extreme unction; anointing of the sick
Obsolete Catholic term for the sacrament of anointing of the sick, now called 病者の塗油 (びょうしゃのとゆ) in modern Japanese. Used historically in pre-Vatican II contexts.

In the past, in the Catholic Church, extreme unction was administered to the dying.
Modern Japanese term for the same sacrament, used in contemporary Catholic contexts.
The term reflects the pre-Vatican II understanding of the sacrament as administered to those near death.
