Archaic verb for mishearing something. In modern Japanese, 聞き間違える is the usual word.
古い文書には「聞き外す」と書いてあるが、今は「聞き間違える」と言う。
In old documents it is written as 聞き外す, but nowadays we say 聞き間違える.

Used when someone stops paying attention before the speaker finishes. Not common in modern conversation; 途中で聞くのをやめる is more natural.
彼は話の途中で聞き外してしまった。
He stopped listening halfway through the story.
