clothes rack; valet stand
A traditional wooden rack for hanging clothes, often used in Japanese inns or dressing rooms. Not a modern hanger or closet rod.
There was a clothes rack in the room at the Japanese inn.
The kanji 衣 (clothing) and 桁 (beam, girder) combine to describe a rack or frame for clothes. The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the word has been used since at least the Edo period.
