A yojijukugo describing diligent, repeated reading of a text, to the point of wearing out the binding. Often used in literary or formal contexts to praise someone's studiousness.
彼は古典を韋編三絶するほど読み込んだ。
He read the classics so thoroughly that the binding came apart.
From a Chinese historical anecdote about Confucius reading the I Ching so many times that the leather bindings of his copy broke three times. The expression is used metaphorically for intensive, repeated reading.
