mimetic word; onomatopoeic word
A technical term used in linguistics and manga criticism for words that imitate sounds or states. Often contrasted with 擬音語 (giongo, sound-imitating words) and 擬態語 (gitaigo, state-imitating words).
In manga, mimetic words are used effectively.
"Dokidoki" and "wakuwaku" are types of mimetic words.
Compound of 音 (on, 'sound') and 喩 (yu, 'metaphor, simile'). The exact origin is uncertain, but it is a modern technical coinage for linguistic and stylistic analysis.
