Describes something (acid, rust, a tool, etc.) physically eating into or corroding a surface; also used figuratively for something deeply affecting or preoccupying someone. Often appears in the set phrase 食い入るように見る (to stare intently).
酸が金属に食い入る。
The acid eats into the metal.

He stared at the screen as if trying to bore holes into it.
