noun
Yōrō Code
Historical term for a Japanese legal code promulgated in 757 CE during the Nara period. It was compiled under the Yōrō era but not enforced until later.
養老律令は、757年に制定された法典です。
The Yōrō Code is a legal code enacted in 757.
The Taihō Code (701 CE) was an earlier legal code that served as a basis for the Yōrō Code.
Named after the Yōrō era (717–724) during which it was compiled. The exact derivation of the era name is uncertain, but it is conventionally associated with the Chinese phrase '養老' meaning 'caring for the elderly'.
