Dated literary term for the physical body, often with a nuance of the body as a gift from one's parents. Almost exclusively used in the set phrase 身体髪膚 (しんたいはっぷ).

Compound of 髪 (hair) and 膚 (skin), used metonymically for the entire body. The exact historical derivation is uncertain; the term is now archaic and survives mainly in the classical phrase 身体髪膚.
